GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

The newly created Center for Nanophysics and Advanced Materials (CNAM), formed from the union of the Center for Superconductivity Research and condensed matter physics research groups at the University of Maryland (UMD) College Park, is seeking exceptional candidates for CNAM Graduate-Student Assistantships. This center brings together 17 UM Physics faculty covering most areas of condensed matter and nanophysics research, including:

• Correlated electron physics, e.g. superconductivity, reduced-dimensionality electron systems, quantum-based mesoscopics, spintronics, quantum condensed phases, semiconductors; and

• Nanophysics, e.g. nanoparticle synthesis and physical property measurement, surface physics, molecular electronics, nanotube and graphene physics.

The objectives of the CNAM are to:

• Establish a unique, interdisciplinary center for the interchange of ideas and skills among scientists working in all aspects of condensed matter and nano physics;
• Lay the foundations for future high technologies based on electronic properties of condensed and nano systems; and
• Develop talented scientists to become future leaders in the field.

The prospective CNAM graduate student is required to work in close collaboration with members of the CNAM. The term of appointment is two years, renewable for one additional year. The CNAM advisor will normally provide funding for up to two additional years. The initial salary will be a research-assistant salary of at least $20,000 per year and a $10,000 fellowship for a total of $30,000 plus benefits.

CNAM is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and applications from women and minorities are encouraged.

If you would like to be considered, (1) indicate your interest in the CNAM on your application to the Physics Graduate Program, and (2) send an e-mail with a CV and a brief explanation of your interest in CNAM to: GradAssistant@cnam.umd.edu. Deadline for applications is January 15, 2009.
